Long-time Gryphonites might remember when we stocked Maui Music ukuleles in the late 1990s. These were crafted in Hawaii by Pete Leiberman, a skilled craftsman with a keen eye for design. Sadly, on December 27, 2000 his workshop burned down and while he was able to rebuild it, he decided to continue as a solo builder and not sell through stores, a decision we were sorry to see but completely understood. Happily, one of his used instruments shows up every now and then.
This lovely 6-string tenor was made in 1996 and it’s a fine example of Peter’s work. The top back and sides are made with figured koa. The top and soundhole are bound in abalone. This has wider body, hence the Super designation, which produces a richer, louder tone. Overall, this ukulele is in excellent structural and cosmetic condition. There is no fret wear and apart from a mark the just below the bridge where it looks like a string snapped and scratched the top, the finish is in fine shape.
This tenor ukulele has a 6-string tuning. The third and first strings are doubled (those pairs of strings are tuned an octave apart, as on a 12-string guitar) and since both strings in the third string pair are plain nylon they're easy to fret. This stringing gives the uke a rich, full tone with a lot of "chime" that works very well for rhythm playing. If you haven't played a 6-string tenor you'll be surprised how easy it is to get that "two ukes" tone.
